Injury-Proofing the Athlete: Resilience, Strength and Longevity

No athlete can truly be “injury-proof.” Highly motivated athletes will always push themselves close to the edge of their abilities in pursuit of performance. That is part of sport. The problem is that sport is rarely clean, predictable or performed from ideal positions. Athletes sprint, brake, rotate, jump, land, collide, reach and react: under fatigue and at high speed, a deadly combination. This is why strength and conditioning cannot only be about improving performance. It must also be about building resilience and extending an athlete’s competitive lifespan. A resilient athlete is not unbreakable; they are simply harder to break.

Strength as a Protective Buffer

Musculoskeletal strength is not only the ability to produce force. It is also the ability to absorb braking forces, impacts, rotational stress and repeated loading. Every sporting action uses some percentage of an athlete’s maximum physical capacity. The stronger the athlete becomes, the smaller that percentage may become for the same task.

Consider two athletes performing an identical movement. One may require 90% of their available strength, while the stronger athlete requires only 60%. The stronger athlete has a larger buffer between routine sporting demands and their maximum capacity. That buffer can become particularly valuable during fatigue, competition or unexpected movement. Strength must also exist throughout usable ranges of motion. Mobility without control may still leave an athlete vulnerable. An athlete may possess excellent hip or shoulder mobility, for example, but if they cannot control those joints while landing, decelerating or rotating, that range may offer little protection.

For this reason, strength programs should include appropriate variations, multiple plans of movement and exercises that develop the athlete’s ability to produce and absorb force from different positions.

Build Capacity Before Demand

Many injuries occur not simply because an athlete experiences high training loads, but because the demands placed on them suddenly exceed their current capacity. A player returns from injury and progresses too quickly. Competition schedules suddenly become more demanding. Sprint, throwing or jumping volumes increase dramatically. Travel, poor sleep and accumulated fatigue reduce recovery.  The important relationship is therefore not simply load, but load relative to capacity. Training should change throughout the sporting calendar. The off-season provides an opportunity to develop strength, muscle mass and physical capacity. During pre-season, conditioning becomes progressively more specific to competitive demands. In-season training should generally prioritize maintaining strength while reducing unnecessary fatigue.

Two or three strength sessions per week may be appropriate during developmental phases, while one or two well-designed sessions may be enough to maintain strength during competition.

Recovery Is Part of Training

Training provides the stimulus; adaptation occurs during recovery. Sleep, nutrition, hydration, rest between sessions, intelligent programming and planned reductions in training load all influence how successfully an athlete adapts. Athletes cannot train or compete at maximum intensity throughout the year. Periodic deloads allow accumulated fatigue to fall while maintaining the adaptations developed through training. As athletes get older, this becomes even more important. Maintaining muscle mass, bone density, connective-tissue tolerance and strength can help preserve the body’s ability to cope with sporting demands.  Ultimately, injury prevention is about improving the balance between demand and capacity. A stronger and better-prepared athlete can produce more force, absorb more force, tolerate greater workloads and recover more effectively. The goal is not to create an athlete who never gets injured. It is to create one who is harder to break, quicker to recover and capable of staying in the game for longer.
